Peace. The world's best photos by children on the topic of peace

from 28. November 2018

847 photos from 137 countries were submitted for the Children Peace Image of the Year Award in 2018!
Most of the entries came from Ukraine, Romania, the Czech Republic, Poland, Serbia, and Germany. A selection of 57 works will be on display at the NHM in Hall 50.

Organized by the photographer Lois Lammerhuber, the Alfred Fried Photography Award annually invites children up to the age of 14 to take a photograph that visualizes their idea of peace. The award is named after the Austrian pacifist and writer Alfred Fried, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1911. Bestowed at the Austrian Parliament in Vienna, the award sends out a strong signal for peace. The Children's Peace Image of the Year 2018 was chosen by an international jury from a shortlist of entries.

What does peace look like? What does peace mean to me? Preceded by a day involving games, stories, picture books, and conversations about the topic of "peace", six children aged 5 to 6 who attend nursery school in Sitzenberg, Lower Austria, set out with their cameras and took photographs of what peace means to them. The photos by these youngest participants, nominated by the jury, can also be seen in the Peace Gallery at the NHM Vienna.
