Through darkness comes life: Subterranean invertebrate fauna - diversity and adaptations

Mittwoch, 04. Mai 2022, 18:30 Uhr | NHM Vortrag
Nesrine Akkari (3. Zoologische Abteilung, NHM Wien)
Caves are unique ecosystems dominated by darkness and scarcity of nutrients rendering them extremely harsh places to live. Many organisms have however evolved morphological and behavioral traits via a series of adaptive genetic changes and succeeded to prevail these severe underground conditions. Subterranean species continue to amaze the scientists not only when encountered in the most unexpected ecosystems, but also with their fascinating morphology. Examples from recent discoveries will be presented, with a special emphasis on myriapods (Arthropoda, Myriapoda).
