The museum in numbers

In an international ranking the Natural History Museum Vienna was rated one of the ten most important museums in the world.

The Natural History Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts were designed by architects Gottfried Semper and Carl Hasenauer and are among the most eye-catching examples of the historicism style of art and architecture which was popular in 19th century Austria.

Compared with other countries, Austria was relatively slow to recognize and support research and collecting in the field of natural sciences.
